What is the Hang Seng index?

  • The Hang Seng Index is the main stock market index in Hong Kong
  • It tracks the performance of the 82 largest companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX)
  • It is organised into four sub-sector indexes of finance, utilities, properties, and commerce and industry
  • The Hang Seng is weighted by market capitalisation, and is a key indicator of Hong Kong’s economic health, with wide-ranging global influence
  • The HKEX is one of the largest stock exchanges in the world, with an aggregate market cap of more than $31 trillion as of December 2023
  • It is often used as a barometer for the broader Chinese economy due to the number of Chinese companies listed

What is the history of the Hang Seng index?

  • The Hang Seng Index, introduced in 1969 by the Hang Seng Bank, tracks the largest companies on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange
  • It includes 82 blue-chip companies, such as Tencent, HSBC, and China Mobile, spanning sectors from technology to banking
  • Starting with a base value of 100, it now trades around 24,000 (current as of January 2025) making it one of the most important indices in Asia
  • The index peaked at over 33,000 in January 2018, reflecting strong performance in sectors like finance and real estate
  • During 2021 and 2022 it gradually declined from a high of over 30,000 to a low of under 15,000
  • Towards the end of 2024, it rallied to over 20,000 again

What does the Hang Seng index consist of?

  • It includes a basket of around 150 large companies from sectors like finance, technology, utilities, industry and real estate
  • The companies are weighted based on their market capitalisation, adjusted for free float, meaning the more significant companies by market value have a larger influence on the index
  • A large proportion of the companies in the Hang Seng Index have business operations in mainland China, reflecting the economic ties between Hong Kong and the mainland of China
  • The composition of the Hang Seng Index is reviewed and adjusted quarterly to ensure that it remains a relevant benchmark of the market

What factors influence the price of the Hang Seng index?

Hong Kong economic data

  • GDP growth: A strong Hong Kong economy, as measured by GDP growth, can boost investor confidence and drive up the HSI. Conversely, a weak economy can dampen demand for goods and services, leading to lower stock prices
  • Inflation: Rising inflation can erode corporate profits and consumer purchasing power, putting downward pressure on the HSI. However, moderate inflation can also stimulate economic growth
  • Unemployment: Low unemployment rates indicate a strong economy and can support corporate earnings, driving up the HSI. High unemployment can weaken economic growth and put downward pressure on the index

Mainland China economic data

  • GDP growth: The Chinese economy is closely linked to Hong Kong’s economy, and its performance can significantly impact the HSI
  • Trade policies: China’s trade policies, including tariffs and trade agreements, can affect the competitiveness of Hong Kong businesses and influence the HIS

Global factors

  • Global economic conditions: The overall health of the global economy can influence the HSI. Economic growth in other major economies can boost demand for Hong Kong exports, while global recessions can dampen demand
  • Geopolitical events: Global political events, such as trade wars, geopolitical tensions, and natural disasters, can create uncertainty and volatility in financial markets, impacting the HIS

Regulatory environment

  • Hong Kong government policies: Government policies related to taxation, monetary policy, and market regulation all influence the HSI
  • China’s policies: China’s policies, particularly those related to cross-border capital flows and trade, can have a significant impact on the Hong Kong stock market

Investor Sentiment

  • Market risk appetite: Investor sentiment can drive short-term fluctuations in the HSI. Risk-on sentiment can lead to increased demand for stocks, while risk-off sentiment can cause selling pressure
  • Market speculation: Speculative trading activity can also influence the HSI, particularly in periods of high volatility

What are the benefits of trading the Hang Seng index using CFDs?

  • Strong regional exposure: The Hang Seng index provides traders with exposure to the largest companies listed in Hong Kong, many of which have strong ties to mainland China, offering insight into one of the world’s fastest-growing economies
  • Volatility from regional developments: The Hang Seng is often more volatile due to political and economic developments in China, making it ideal for short-term traders seeking opportunities from market fluctuations
  • Sector concentration: The Hang Seng index is heavily weighted towards financial services and real estate, which provides traders with focused exposure to the main sectors that drive the Hong Kong economy
  • Liquidity and trading volume: As one of the most traded indices in Asia, the Hang Seng offers high liquidity, which ensures tight spreads and quick trade execution, ideal for both retail and institutional traders
  • 24-hour trading: Many brokers such as MarketMates offer 24-hour trading on HSI CFDs, enabling traders to capitalise on market movements outside of regular trading hours.
