USD to JPY trading

The USD/JPY pair, commonly known as the ‘Gopher,’ is one of the most popular and liquid currency pairs in the world.

It represents the United States dollar (USD) and the Japanese yen (JPY).

As the US is the largest global economy, and Japan the third-largest, this pair plays a highly significant role in global forex trading.

Popularity and characteristics

This pair is widely traded due to its high liquidity and low spreads, making it popular for short-term trading strategies like scalping and day-trading.

It’s one of the major pairs and is often used as a benchmark for the performance of Asian economies.

Main influences on USD/JPY

Movements in the USD/JPY are heavily influenced by interest rate differentials between the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan, as well as economic data releases from both countries.

Geopolitical developments in the Asia-Pacific region also significantly impact this pair, as does Japan’s trade balance.

What are the main economic news events that move the price of USD/JPY?

  • US interest rates: Higher US interest rates generally strengthen the USD against the JPY
  • Japanese interest rates: The Bank of Japan’s monetary policy significantly influences the JPY. Low interest rates tend to weaken the JPY
  • US economic data: US economic releases, such as Non-Farm Payrolls, inflation data and GDP figures, impact USD strength
  • Japanese economic data: Japanese economic data, such as industrial production and consumer spending, influence the JPY
  • Risk aversion: During periods of global uncertainty, the JPY often appreciates as it’s considered a safe-haven currency
  • Geopolitical events: Global events, such as political instability or international crises, can impact both currencies

What factors should I take into consideration before deciding which forex currency pair to trade?

  1. Market volatility

Some pairs, like GBP/JPY or AUD/JPY, are more volatile due to their exposure to global economic events and market sentiment, while others like EUR/USD tend to be more stable. Higher volatility means greater risk, but also greater profit potential.

  1. Trading hours

Currency pairs can behave differently depending on the time of day. For instance, USD/JPY may be more active during the overlapping hours of the Tokyo and New York sessions. Know when liquidity is highest for your chosen pair to maximise your trading opportunities.

  1. Economic news and events

Pay attention to the economic calendar. For example, EUR/USD is heavily impacted by U.S. Federal Reserve announcements and European Central Bank decisions. Pairs sensitive to frequent news events can lead to sharp price movements, both positive and negative.

  1. Liquidity

Major pairs like USD/JPY and GBP/USD are the most liquid, meaning you can easily enter and exit trades without significant price slippage. Exotic pairs (e.g. USD/TRY) have lower liquidity, which can result in higher spreads and price fluctuations.

  1. Spreads and costs

Currency pairs with higher trading volumes, such as USD/JPY, often have tighter spreads, meaning lower transaction costs. Exotic or less-traded pairs tend to have wider spreads, increasing the cost of trading due to the potential for slippage.

  1. Correlations

Some currency pairs are correlated with commodities (e.g. AUD/USD with gold) or other assets. Consider how movements in other markets might affect your chosen pair. This can help in anticipating price changes or diversifying risk.

  1. Your chosen trading strategy

If you prefer short-term, high-frequency trading, pairs with high volatility and liquidity, like USD/JPY or EUR/USD, might be suitable.

For long-term positions, you might prefer pairs influenced by macroeconomic fundamentals, such as GBP/USD or AUD/USD.

Benefits of trading USD/JPY

  • High liquidity: As one of the most traded currency pairs in the world, USD/JPY offers tight spreads and deep liquidity, making it attractive for both beginners and experienced traders
  • Low trading costs: Due to the high volume of trades, USD/JPY typically offers low transaction costs, which is beneficial for short-term traders
  • Safe-haven appeal: The Japanese yen is considered a safe-haven currency, allowing you to hedge or take advantage of market uncertainty

Opportunities for carry trades

With Japan’s historically low-interest rates, the USD/JPY pair provides opportunities for traders to profit from carry trades

Risk sentiment indicator

The USD/JPY pair often reflects global risk sentiment, providing traders with insight into broader market conditions

Strong reaction to macro economic data

The pair is highly responsive to U.S. and Japanese economic reports, making it ideal for traders who thrive on news-based strategies
