🏆 Best Prop Trading Firms: What to Look for (and What to Avoid)

I’ve worked in this industry since 2008 – first inside global brokerages, and now as ceo of MarketMates – and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:

Most traders don’t fail challenges because they’re bad at trading. They fail because they signed up with the wrong prop firm.

Too many firms are designed to profit when you lose. They throw out big leverage, flashy payouts, and fast-track funding… then hit you with hidden fees, poor execution, or unrealistic rules that make it hard to succeed long-term.

This guide is different.

It’s not just a list of “top firms” based on payouts or hype. I’ll break down how prop trading really works, the red flags to watch out for, and the key criteria that serious traders (the ones who make it) use to evaluate a firm.

Whether you’re just getting started or looking for a better fit, this guide will help you choose a prop firm that fits your trading style and gives you a real shot at success.

✅ What Makes a Good Prop Firm?

Not all prop firms are created equal. I’ve seen the inner workings of this industry and when we built MarketMates’ prop funding model, we deliberately avoided the tricks that trip traders up.

A good prop firm should set you up to succeed. Not by making it easy, but by being fair, transparent, and aligned with your goals as a trader.

🎯 Flexible Challenges That Fit Your Style

Not every trader thrives under the same rules. Some are swing traders. Others scalp. That’s why you want to look for prop firms offering different challenge types to suit different trading approaches.

If a firm forces you into one rigid model, especially one that contradicts your strategy.  It’s a red flag.

📜 Clear, Honest Rules (No Gotchas)

Some firms use clever wording or technicalities to catch traders out, such as daily drawdown based on equity after profits, hidden lot size rules, etc.

We went the other way: simple, transparent rules you can plan around. You should always know exactly where you stand in a challenge, no surprises.

💸 Low Trading Costs

This one’s overlooked. A firm might not charge a fee upfront, but if they load your trades with high spreads, slow execution, or hidden commissions, it adds up fast.

Lower pricing means you earn more on every trade and can pass more challenges. Always check the spreads and commission fees of the broker behind the prop firm.

🧑‍💻 Real Support and Tools

Some firms are just websites with payment gateways. Look for firms that offer real educational content, performance tracking, and support.

If you’re on a growth journey as a trader, you need a prop firm that supports that, not just one that tests you.

🚩 What to Watch Out For (Red Flags)

I’ve seen talented traders pass challenges and hit their targets, only to lose out because of hidden rules or unclear terms. It’s frustrating and avoidable.

Over the years, I’ve learned what separates a fair prop firm from one that’s just selling challenges. Here are some of the biggest red flags to watch for:

❗️Hidden Drawdown Rules

Some firms calculate daily drawdown on equity including open profits, which can catch you off guard.

You might grow a $100K account to $102K, then dip to $98.5K on a live trade, and fail the challenge even though you’re technically up.

Always check:

  • Is drawdown calculated on equity or balance?
  • Does it reset daily or trail?
  • Are the rules clearly explained before you pay?

🧮 Delayed or Withheld Payouts

If a firm has vague payout timelines or stories of traders not being paid, take it seriously.

You want clear terms, no hoops to jump through, and a history of honouring payouts.

🧨 Gimmicky Restrictions

Some firms ban trading during news events, or restrict holding trades overnight or over weekends.

While some limitations are fair, others feel like traps. If a firm’s rules feel like they’re designed to make you fail, they probably are.

🥷 Lack of Transparency

If you can’t find out where the firm is registered, who runs it, or how your trades are executed, that’s a red flag.

Transparency matters especially when there’s real money and effort on the line.

🤖 Are They Really Funding Traders?

Some firms are challenge-only businesses with no intention of funding real trading accounts.

That doesn’t mean the challenge is worthless, but it’s worth asking:

  • What happens if I succeed?
  • How is the funded account structured?

📊 Futures vs Forex vs Stock Prop Firms

Not all prop firms operate in the same markets. Whether you choose a futures, forex, or stock prop firm can completely change your experience, from the challenge rules to the hours you trade.

💱 Forex Prop Firms

Forex is by far the biggest slice of the prop trading industry. These forex prop firms fund traders on currency pairs and often on indices and gold as well.

Challenges tend to be short (30 days), leverage is high (often 100:1), and the markets run 24 hours. It’s popular because it’s accessible, liquid, and you can start small.

📈 Futures Prop Firms

Futures prop firms like TopStep or Earn2Trade operate differently. You’re usually trading US index futures (ES, NQ) or commodities.

The rules are stricter; daily loss limits, position caps, and no overnight holding, because futures are leveraged by default.

But these firms often provide stronger education, live coaching, and dashboards to track your mistakes, making them attractive for traders focused on discipline and process.

📊 Stock Prop Firms

Stock prop firms (often desk-based or remote with direct market access) typically cater to day traders looking for momentum setups in individual equities.

They provide higher buying power (up to 20:1 intraday), direct order routing, and sometimes rebates on adding liquidity.

This environment suits experienced scalpers or pattern traders but often comes with licensing or minimum activity requirements.

⚖️ Which is best for you?

It depends on your strategy and what you’re comfortable with:

  • ✅ Want 24-hour access and major macro moves? Forex prop is probably your fit.
  • ✅ Prefer structured hours, strong education, and no overnight risk? Look at futures.
  • ✅ Like scanning individual companies for momentum? A stock prop shop might be your lane.

The key is matching your style to the market and finding a firm that supports that, with rules and tools that help you succeed, not just catch you out.

✅ Best Prop Trading Firms Compared

Below is a straight-up comparison of some of the biggest and most talked-about prop trading firms in 2025. I’ve focused on the details that matter: how hard it is to pass, how much they charge, how they pay, and how fair their rules are.

⚠️ Note: This isn’t an endorsement, it’s a side-by-side view so you can compare. Always read the fine print before you join any challenge.

🔎 What to Look For in This Table

  • Drawdown rules: These are usually the biggest challenge. A 5% daily drawdown can knock you out even on a good trade if it dips too far before recovering.
  • Profit targets: 8–10% sounds simple, but not if you’re managing risk tightly.
  • Payout splits: Everyone says 80–90%, but read when and how often they pay.
  • Cost: A cheap challenge can be expensive if it comes with hidden costs or unclear rules.

🌏 Looking at Other Markets?

If you’re curious about how prop trading works in different regions, we’ve broken it down for you:

It’s the same prop model worldwide , but some firms are designed to be a better fit for local traders. Use these guides to do your homework before jumping in.

Or if you are new to prop trading you will fins this guide useful:

Infographic titled "How to Choose the Right Prop Firm" by MarketMates. Includes checklist for evaluating prop firms based on trading style, risk profile, rules, risk management, and testing environment.

🧭 How to Choose the Right Prop Firm for You

There’s no single “best” prop firm, only the one that fits your trading style, objectives, and personality.

When we were building the MarketMates prop model, I spent a lot of time reviewing what traders really need and it’s not just the highest payout split. It’s alignment.

🎯 What’s your trading style?

  • Scalpers need firms with tight spreads, fast execution, and no restrictions on holding trades short-term.
  • Swing traders should make sure weekend holding and news trading are allowed.
  • Automated or EA traders need to check if those strategies are supported — many firms don’t allow them.

💰 What risk profile suits you?

  • Can you manage a daily drawdown rule, or would a max loss-only rule give you more flexibility?
  • Do you want to go slow and steady over 20 days, or take your best shot over a shorter window?

🔐 What do the rules really say?

Some firms hide behind complex rulebooks. Always ask:

  • What exactly counts as a breach?
  • Is there a payout delay?
  • Are refunds guaranteed or conditional?

Even strong traders can fail if they misunderstand the fine print.

🛡️ Do they prioritise risk management?

This is a big one. From what I’ve seen, the best firms are focused on managing risk first, because that’s what matters when managing real capital.

If the rules feel loose or too easy, it often means the firm is B-booking your trades in the live account phase — meaning they’re not backing you with real money, just keeping you on demo and hoping you lose.

A good prop firm wants you to win but they also want you to manage risk like a pro.

🧪 Can you test before you commit?

Some firms offer a free trial or allow you to explore the dashboard before you pay. This is a great way to check the experience and see if the environment fits your process.

✅ Final Thoughts: Choose a Prop Firm That Fits You

Prop trading can be an amazing path to growth but only if you treat it like a professional proving ground. Don’t fall into the trap of chasing payout splits or shiny marketing.

Want to try prop trading?

At MarketMates, we’re a broker and a prop firm, so we do things differently:

  1. Simple, flexible challenges that cater for different trading styles.
  2. Funded accounts that have trades placed on the real market.
  3. Daily payouts so you don’t have to wait for your rewards.

Frequently asked questions

What is a prop trading firm?

A proprietary trading firm (or “prop firm”) gives traders access to capital to trade financial markets. If you meet their challenge conditions or prove yourself via a performance track record, they’ll fund your account and split the profits with you.

Most firms offer evaluation phases where you trade a demo account under specific rules (e.g. profit targets, drawdown limits, time limits). If you pass, you can progress to a funded account. The structure varies by firm — always read the fine print.

No — some are primarily challenge-selling businesses with unclear or restrictive rules. Others genuinely want to fund profitable traders. Look for transparency, real risk management, and a history of paying out. If it feels gimmicky, it probably is.

Watch for hidden drawdown calculations, restrictions on news trading or weekend holding, payout delays, or overly complex rulebooks. Ask: Is this firm testing me to manage risk — or trying to make me fail?

In my view, a good prop firm has:

  • Clear, fair rules

  • Reasonable profit targets

  • Low trading costs

  • Real funding and accountability

  • A risk-first mindset

It should feel like a partnership — not a trap.
