Bank Desk FX Weekly 8 September 25

Weak US jobs data put pressure on the dollar, with markets debating a 25–50 bp Fed cut at the September meeting. EUR and GBP gained on tighter spreads, AUD and NZD found support from risk and commodities, while CAD lagged on weak data and oil. The yen sold off sharply after Prime Minister Ishiba resigned, adding political risk to the JPY outlook.

Weekly FX Report Summary

Bank FX views in one page, covering the key drivers, clear bias by pair, and the week’s events that move markets.

USD

Soft US payrolls at 22k and a 4.3 percent unemployment rate pulled front end yields lower and weighed on the dollar, while gold stayed firm. Markets lean to a September 25 bp cut with 50 bp debated, but this week’s CPI could temper the most dovish bets. The read from banks is that growth is wobbling, inflation progress is uneven, and the Fed will ease without trying to shock. For traders, treat DXY pops as rallies to fade unless CPI re-accelerates.

EURUSD

The ECB is expected to hold policy steady and acknowledge inflation near target while activity stabilizes. Narrower US EU rate spreads support the euro, though French political risk and ratings chatter are a headline overhang. If US CPI behaves, a push toward late July highs is on, but not a runaway trend. Buy dips with tight risk and watch France headlines.

GBPUSD

Sterling is riding the broad USD tone and a still positive UK rate premium. Domestic noise persists, but the dollar leg dominates. With USD softer and UK growth steady, dips find demand unless US inflation surprises hot. Tactical long preferred into resistance near 1.3560 to 1.3600.

USDJPY

Yen weakness accelerated after Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced his resignation following election losses. USDJPY jumped into the high 148s from the mid 147s and yen crosses rose. Political uncertainty adds a new headwind for JPY. The pair remains anchored to US yields, so CPI and the Fed are still the bigger drivers. Near term, politics can extend rallies toward 148 to 149, but medium term bias stays sell on strength if US yields continue to trend down.

AUDUSD

Aussie has a tailwind from a weaker USD, improving local momentum, and firm gold. Australia sentiment and business surveys this week can reinforce the turn. Banks lean to a grind higher toward the mid 0.66s while 0.65 holds, with commodities and global risk tone as key checks.

NZDUSD

Kiwi benefits from the softer USD and a calmer risk backdrop. Local data flow is light, and RBNZ governance transparency talk sits in the background. Constructive above 0.595 with follow through reliant on US CPI.

USDCAD

CAD lags peers despite a softer dollar, weighed by weak domestic data and softer oil. With crude under pressure and Canada’s growth pulse mixed, dips are less sticky than in AUD or EUR. Range to slightly higher unless DXY resumes a clear downtrend.

Other Pairs

CHF gains if French political stress worsens or if US CPI allows a broad USD selloff. CNH remains guided by the PBoC fix with policy easing and targeted trade measures keeping volatility contained rather than trending.

Bias Table

PairBiasKey Drivers
USDBearish into CPI, two way on eventWeak payrolls, easing odds vs CPI risk
EURUSDMild BullishECB on hold, tighter US EU spreads, France risk
GBPUSDMild BullishUSD tone, UK term premium, 1.3560 to 1.3600 cap
USDJPYNeutral near term, Bearish medium termUS yields vs JPY political shock
AUDUSDMild BullishSofter USD, improving AU data, gold resilience
NZDUSDNeutral to Mild BullishUSD leg, light NZ data, steady risk tone
USDCADNeutral to Mild Bullish USDSoft CAD data and oil vs broad USD

Key Event Outlook

United States

CPI and PPI are the swing factors before the September 17 FOMC. A slight firming in headline with core near 0.3 percent month on month could temper 50 bp cut bets even as benchmark revisions likely show weaker past job growth. A softer CPI extends USD weakness. A surprise pop sparks a USD bounce and curve re steepening.

Eurozone

ECB to stand pat with limited guidance and updated projections. France confidence vote and ratings risk are the near term wildcards for EUR and periphery spreads.

United Kingdom

Monthly GDP frames the Q3 growth path. Sterling stays more sensitive to USD direction and rate spreads than politics, but data misses near resistance can cap gains.

Japan

Final Q2 GDP and current account are unlikely to change the BoJ narrative. Yen trades US rate moves. Leadership change adds uncertainty that can keep JPY on the back foot short term.

Australia

Consumer sentiment, NAB conditions, and inflation expectations update the domestic recovery story. Better local prints support AUD on crosses if US data allow the risk trade to breathe.

New Zealand

Retail card spending and PMI guide the near term activity pulse. Policy transparency reform talk is background rather than a near term NZD driver.

Canada

Light calendar. With oil heavy and recent GDP soft, CAD underperforms if USD steadies. US CPI remains the main near term driver for USDCAD.

Other and Geopolitics

OPEC plus discussing an early unwind of cuts keeps a lid on crude. China rolled out targeted tariffs and local property easing, while the PBoC fix guides CNH. European political risks remain a headline driver for EUR.
