USDJPY surged after Japan’s election victory for Sanae Takaichi sparked a 200-pip gap higher as markets priced a softer Bank of Japan stance. Westpac, Danske, Scotiabank, and Barclays outline mixed USD, EUR, and AUD views ahead of key central bank events this week.

Weekly FX Report Summary

Bank FX views in one page, covering the key drivers, clear bias by pair, and the week’s events that move markets.

USD

Westpac says the USD has steadied after recent losses as the U.S. government shutdown delays data releases and leaves markets trading on Fed rhetoric. Treasury yields are slightly lower, and moves across assets remain contained. Focus now shifts to the FOMC minutes and consumer sentiment later in the week. Traders are watching for hints on whether the Fed’s tightening bias will hold amid softer growth momentum. Implication: USD direction depends on tone from Fed speakers rather than data in the short term.

EURUSD

Danske Bank notes Eurozone inflation rose slightly to 2.2% y/y on energy base effects while core held at 2.3%. The ECB appears finished with rate cuts, and markets now focus on Eurozone retail sales and Sentix data for growth cues. Barclays says the euro remains capped by weak demand and sluggish credit growth. Implication: EURUSD likely range-bound near 1.09, tracking global risk and U.S. yields.

GBPUSD

Westpac highlights a quiet domestic calendar with only PMIs and BoE commentary on deck. Governor Bailey recently noted that inflation progress has been “uneven,” suggesting the BoE will stay patient before cutting again. Lloyds adds that GBP remains tied to global sentiment more than UK-specific factors this week. Implication: GBPUSD likely trades sideways, with rallies limited unless U.S. yields fall further.

USDJPY

USD/JPY gapped higher by around 200 pips at the Monday open, rising from Friday’s close near 147.45 to trade around 149.60 after Japan’s weekend election. The ruling LDP’s leadership win by Sanae Takaichi, a fiscal dove aligned with Abenomics-style policies, triggered the move as markets priced in expectations that the Bank of Japan will delay or soften further tightening.

Reuters reports Takaichi plans fresh fiscal stimulus, while the Nikkei 225 surged to record highs and Japanese yields eased as investors embraced the policy continuity. The sharp gap higher reflects a repricing of BOJ policy expectations under new leadership. Traders now eye resistance near 150.00, with support at the 149.00–148.50 zone marking the lower edge of the gap.

Implication: Bias remains bullish but volatile while USD/JPY holds above 149.00. Sustained moves beyond 150 require firm U.S. yields or continued BOJ dovishness, while a break back below 148.50 could trigger a partial gap fill toward 147.50.

AUDUSD

Westpac Australia notes the RBA kept rates on hold but maintained a tightening bias. Domestic data showed softer household spending and a narrowing trade surplus, while China’s latest PMI uptick helped risk sentiment. With the USD stabilising and commodities mixed, AUDUSD remains range-bound near 0.65. Implication: A sustained break higher needs stronger China data or dovish Fed signals.

NZDUSD

Westpac New Zealand expects the RBNZ to cut 50 bps to 2.5% at its meeting this week, front-loading easing amid weak growth and subdued confidence. Markets price risk of either a 25 or 50 bp move, with a larger cut likely to pressure NZD short-term. Implication: Any surprise 25 bp move could lift NZD briefly, but policy divergence with the Fed keeps upside limited.

USDCAD

Scotiabank argues CAD weakness is now “significant and excessive,” with the USD overvalued by more than two standard deviations versus fair value. Softer crude and weak terms of trade weigh on the loonie, though stretched valuation and resistance near 1.40 may cap further USD gains. Implication: Bias neutral to slightly lower in USD/CAD; watch oil and U.S. yields for direction.

Other Pairs

No major new commentary this week on CHF or EM FX beyond general risk tone and oil dynamics.

Bias Table

PairBiasKey Drivers

Key Event Outlook

United States

FOMC minutes (Wed) and Univ. of Michigan sentiment (Fri) headline in a week light on data due to the shutdown. Markets will read the minutes for clues on inflation risks and policy bias.

Eurozone

Sentix confidence and retail sales early in the week, followed by German industrial output. EUR trades on relative growth and global risk appetite.

United Kingdom

PMIs and BoE commentary in focus. With limited domestic catalysts, sterling follows USD trends and risk tone.

Japan

Election aftermath dominates. Markets assess policy signals under Takaichi. Wages and household spending data will test whether BOJ tightening expectations need to be adjusted.

Australia

RBA on hold but data-dependent. Westpac-MI consumer sentiment and Chinese credit numbers will guide AUD.

New Zealand

RBNZ decision (Wed) is key. Westpac expects a 50 bp cut to 2.5%. QSBO business survey precedes the meeting.

Canada

Ivey PMI (Tue) and labour market (Fri). CAD trades oil and relative USD moves.

Other / Geopolitics

OPEC+ production talks and China stimulus discussions remain watchpoints. A risk-on environment supports carry trades; renewed geopolitical tension could reverse that.
